The beautiful philosophy behind Africa Fashion Week Amsterdam

Are you ready to enjoy the beauty that is inspired by mother Africa? Do you believe that the time has come for Africans in the Netherlands and Europe to represent their notion of fashion?

Amsterdam didn’t have one yet and the stunning and renowned Dutch-Cameroonian fashion designer Diana Tambe decided to found one. After a period of hard work, Africa Fashion Week Amsterdam (AFWA) is now a fact. From the 27th to the 30th of August, the second edition of this event ‘for fashion professionals and fashion occult’ is taking place at the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT).The goal? ‘Celebrating African & African inspired fashion, art, culture and rich heritage’, as the organisation declared in the press release of the event.

‘Africa Fashion Week proves the democratisation of fashion’, declared the writer Alphonse Muambi, as one of the speakers at the first edition of the AFWA last year. Muambi might just be right, for AFWA breaks with the existing idea that the African notion of fashion does not exist. By giving African designers an opportunity to present their newest designs, AFWA literally proves that we don’t necessarily need a Jean Paul Gaultier or a Giorgio Armani in order to call something fashion.

One my favourite designers who will present his new designs is the ‘Afropolitain’ Patou Manga. This Camerounese maestro has worked with big guys like Kanye West and Fally Ipupa. For The Africa Fashion Week Amsterdam 2015, Manga and many others will prove that they can defend and represent Africa in the fashion universe.

The organisation promises that this edition will be bigger and better than the first one. Judging from the list of renowned designers, speakers and public figures who will contribute to this edition, this promise will surely be held. One of these contributors is our Afropolitan pride Omar Munie, who will open the show. Also, let us not forget that the Nigerian superstar Ramsey Nouah is the special host.

There’s no afropolitan universe without the right look. Fashion defines the way we represent ourselves to the outside world. ‘In life, when you make a choice, you defend it. When you choose your style, you live it and you defend it’. These wise words are from the Congolese music star Ferre Gola. Africa Fashion Week makes a clear statement: There’s a notion of African Fashion and we are ready to show it. Are you ready to prove it?
